Planet Name: Grift
Faction: Grifters
The people of Grift decided to remove themselves from Aurora Novus and fortified their planet as an independent hub, from which its people could travel freely and live away from the rules, regulations, and confines of Aurora Novus. Forming an independent faction, The Grifters, from the words 'Grift' and 'drifters', its people can be found in every corner of the universe to aid the survival of humanity at its most basic level. Grift has become a refuge for those seeking to escape Aurora Novus for any reason.
Key Locations
The Corridors: An extensive series of partially underwater underground bunkers that spread across the majority of the planet to connect major cities. Some of the bunkers are as large as cities themselves, and many Grift residents choose to live in the subterranean Corridors to further remove themselves from the busy world that comes with intergalactic transport and living.
The Gene Library: A library the size of a city, the people of Grift have collected genetic samples from millions of individuals over the course of history. There is a large gap just prior to the formation of the Reonic Sphere. Visitation to the library has a large number of security processes that must be cleared, and withdrawal is not permitted. As a result of the Library, people of all races can be found on the planet.
Submerged City of Naamo: Home to much of the Mer and Saurian population of Grift, the Submerged City of Naamo also houses the planets best scientists. The City is protected against the use of arcanotech, for fear that the unpredictable nature of the magi-science could be catastrophic for its residents.
Adrift: A moon in orbit of Grift. It houses workers in a number of professions such as sanitation, waste disposal, and cleaners. It was provided to give more space for the overpopulated planet, however the moon was also immediately overpopulated.
Key Disadvantages
Independent: Over time, the split from the Aurora Novus has deepened, much to Grift’s own detriment. While most of the universe flourished, Grift looked inward and sought to only protect themselves. They receive no aid from Aurora Novus and will actively refuse planetary aid if they need it. Grifter individuals will, however, aid those in need in return for some compensation.
Economic Shortfall: Due to the planet having such isolationist views, the planet lacks support from Aurora Novus and does not generate enough income to fully support itself. Many citizens of Grift work across the Aurora Novus system to earn enough for them and their families, as jobs on their home planet are few and far between and do not pay well.
Limited Resources: Due to the number of refugees that Grift take in, cities are overflowing. Hospitals are always at capacity, food is rationed and expensive, and housing is a minefield. There is little space for anything that doesn't go toward the subpar care of the new Grift citizens, and everyone falls through the cracks.
High Crime Rate: Grift is known for being a haven for fugitives escaping the consequences of their actions on Aurora Novus planets. Operating on a separate tracking system to the rest of the universe, Grift will grant any refugee diplomatic immunity and a blank slate upon becoming a citizen of the planet. As a result, huge influxes of criminals can arrive when there is a crackdown on organised crime elsewhere in the universe, and rates will spike on Grift as rivals continue their battles.
