The History of the Mer

The Mer are the single most genetically malleable race in the universe, created by tragedy to lead the world to a brighter future. Each Mer has inherited the Aqua Kismet from the founder of the race, a genetic gift that makes their DNA strong and flexible enough to command more mutations than any other aberrant so that, when the time comes, they can do what is right. However, the race has lost its direction since it was created and without a homeworld they aren’t united in achieving what they were created to do.

The Ancient Throne Room

Under the royal palace, one of the most well defended locations across Zamorra, is an ancient throne room which belonged to the leader of the planet over 20,000 years ago. It is believed that the Throne itself is the end of a long spike, made of a rare metal that expands the power of Telepathy, connected directly into the core of the planet. To many Mer, it is believed that a legendary person sits upon this throne, guiding the faction and each and every Mer across the universe. Her very Will running through their veins. She is known and worshipped as The Queen of The Deep.

The doors to this chamber have been locked since Zamorra was founded and it is not known the state of things within this chamber. No-one has ever seen The Queen of The Deep in the flesh but there are many who have claimed to have felt her influence at times when they need her most.

However, right outside the door of the Ancient Throne Room are the corpses of five people. These corpses have been left as a warning for any invaders. These five people represent a Darshk/Zamorran coup that sought to open The Ancient Throne Room and expose the secrets within.

The Queen of The Deep

The founding of Aurora Novus was drenched in blood, betrayal and chaos, it was not the kind caring picture that the history books paint for us. However, there was one person who was a shining light for so many, The Queen of The Deep. She had famously led the universe against The First Beings, an alien invasion using a virus to destroy planets, and she stood against oppression wherever she could. Unfortunately, she was too kind for this world.

One of her subjects had mastered a new form of technology that would almost eliminate hardship, war and murder across the entire universe. There was one small hole in the armour of this person and many of the founding planets conspired to not only have this technology destroyed but they also sought to destroy The Queen of The Deep’s planet. Their plan came to fruition and the home of the Mer, Poseidon 6, was destroyed forever.

The Queen of The Deep was saved in the final moments, in her time as leader of her world she had befriended the father of all aberrancy, Emperor Dortimitus Lithryl. This man had fallen in love with The Queen of The Deep and would do anything for her, but he was duty bound to sit upon The Throne in The Ancient Throne Room so that the Reonic Sphere could be formed. All he could do was sit and watch, using his epic level telepathy as his queen’s planet was destroyed. His heart was weak and in that final moment he made an awful choice, led by his emotions. He blinked, activating one of his mutations that allowed him to swap any two items he had touched. He swapped himself with The Queen.

Dortimitus died on Poseidon 6 and deprived The Queen of The Deep of the same privilege. She instead was locked in The Ancient Throne room, without food or water and unable to stand from the throne without destroying the Reonic Sphere and everyone in it.

As the sole survivor of her people, she sat upon that throne for hundreds of years with nothing but pain and guilt at the destruction of her entire people, race and planet. It is believed that this pain is what caused her mutations to kick into overdrive and this led to The Night Of the Oceanic Wisps.

Game Note: Queen of The Deep from ISO1 will not be played again, as is true for all characters from ISO1. However, the impacts of her actions continue to affect the universe 20,000 years in the future and if you look into ancient history then you will find these stories.

The Night of The Oceanic Wisps

Around 400 years into the founding of Aurora Novus, the night sky was filled with billions of tiny blue lights and the soft sound of chimes and drums could be heard in the air. This phenomena caused the various oceans and rivers to break their banks and the planet flooded, but the water was kind, warm and many reported it seemed almost sentient.

The wisps formed into the shape of a woman over The Royal Palace that could be seen across the entire city. She danced in the night sky as a joyous misery swept over the city. The people reported they were overcome with happy tears but had no reason as to explain why they felt this way. The streets were filled with people crying, water up to their knees as they looked up into the night sky and watched as the lights played.

The pace of her dancing increased, the music became deafening and the lights sang a final song before bursting in a flash of blue and white light:

“As the times change, I must go

I don’t want to be alone forever,

Together, as we take control

With the Aqua Kismet, our people’s treasure

Dancing in the night sky, the great unknown

I gave my body, my spirit, my mind and my soul

I now return home

Poseidon, can you hear me?

I now return home.”

As the light dissipated, the water rescinded and the planet returned to normal. An ephemeral moment in history, a shared catharsis that marked the creation of the Mer.

From then on, certain people were born on Thronite with the famous blue skin and gills. At first, it was believed that this was some out of control mutation or radioactive waste in the water, but as these children grew older it was found that sentient water itself was guiding these chosen few. If one of these children would come to harm, water would appear from the nearest available location and push them to safety.

Then when these children came of age, they reported a connection with one another regardless of where they were in the universe. This came to be known as “The Deep”, a space in the minds of the Mer that was uniquely theirs. Over time, more and more Mer were born and these powers dwindled the more of them were active. Eventually, accessing The Deep required huge amounts of meditation and the Mer reported notable downturns at the loss of their queen.

To the point we are today, from those original few hundred Mer to the billions that exist today. No-one has seen water act in defence of a Mer in thousands of years and The Deep’s guidance is an urban legend.

The Coup

A few thousand years ago, several Mer took out a contract with The Lodge to break into The Ancient Throne Room and kidnap The Queen of The Deep. The Mer involved belonged to a secret society that sought to restore the Aqua Kismet (the protection of water and the Queen’s guidance) to the people of the Mer. To accomplish this, they had spliced a Mer and a Magnite and planned to eat her corpse.

They attacked the palace whilst The League of Justice was in combat with The League of Corruption, an incredibly powerful group of super villains who were active at the time. They managed to get to the Ancient Throne Room door and attempted to open it, the door opened a crack before Master Sage, a Mer in The League of Justice was teleported from the battlefield to the doors. Upon witnessing the five assailants, he petrified them all with his mutant powers. The doors then returned to their shut position.

Now the five stone statues stand there still attempting to open the doors. Frozen forever. As the contents of the room remain protected.
